Steve Jobs on Bill Gates over the years: "To say the least, Bill and Steve had had an interesting rivalry over the years. Of course, Bill Gates has retired to charity work leaving Steve Ballmer in charge of Microsoft.
The Huffington Post has put a fun post together of some of Jobs' best quotes about Gates. My favorite is from 2006:
'I have no problem with their (Microsoft's) success, they've earned their success for the most part. I have a problem with the fact that they just make really third-rate products.'
As the years have gone on, Jobs has mellowed a bit. In a joint appearance at the All Things Digital Conference in 2007 the two titans joked and laughed with each other.
So take a quick trip down memory lane and see the Steve Jobs fireworks before you fire off your own tonight.

Hoping to land a job at Ferrari after graduation? The company's been known to recruit straight out of college, but your best bet may be to enroll at the Enzo Ferrari Faculty of Engineering at the University of Modena e Reggio Emilia.

The Italian automaker has been fostering closer and closer ties with the thousand-year-old institute of higher education, having established the 'Mille Chili' laboratory there last year. The recent dedication of the engineering faculty in Enzo's name takes it a step further in cementing ties between the two institutions.

The dedication was carried out by Enzo's son Piero Ferrari (who serves as the company's vice-chairman) and Luca di Montezemolo, both of whom were awarded honorary degrees by the school. Details in the press release after the jump.

Google to employees: 'Mac or Linux, but no more Windows'

We first heard rumors of this policy change a couple of months ago, but now it's made the papers: the Financial Times is reporting that Google is phasing out the use of Windows internally, as employees are migrated to either Linux or Mac OS X on machine turnovers or new hires. The policy change was precipitated in large part by the security breach attributed to Chinese hackers; Google's IT leaders apparently feel that Microsoft's OS represents too great a risk across the enterprise to leave it in place.

The story says that in January, subsequent to the security breaches, Windows installations on desktop computers were no longer allowed, although laptops were still eligible for Windows at the employee's discretion. Many Google staffers, however, were already heading for the Mac as a security measure, and at this point things have been pretty well laid down in stone: 'Getting a new Windows machine now requires CIO approval,' according to one anonymous Googler quoted by the FT.

Google has long offered employees a choice of OS for their primary workstation, and some dissatisfaction with the new rules has been registered; however, the sentiment is apparently not that negative, considering the alternative possibilities. 'It would have made more people upset if they banned Macs rather than Windows,' says an unnamed employee. No doubt.
Business Insider suggests that Google's infrastructure represents about 20,000 Windows licenses that now will not be renewed or upgraded. Of course, the existing Wintel hardware will run Ubuntu Linux or the company's upcoming Chrome OS, but adding Mac OS X to the mix will mean purchasing Mac hardware. Maybe that's what the Steve-Eric Coffee Summit was about: truckloads of MacBook Pros heading for the Googleplex.

(As one commenter suggests below, this also means that malware developers may have new reason to focus their efforts on Mac OS X. Every silver lining has a cloud.)

Adobe CEO reponds to Steve's Flash rant

Just hours after Apple posted Steve Jobs's explanation of why Flash isn't supported on the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen responded. The Wall Street Journal live-blogged their exclusive interview with Narayen at 2:35 PM Eastern. Here are some of the highlights.

Narayen began by reinforcing Adobe's belief in open content, noting that the Creative Suite apps were designed to work on multiple platforms, and notes that Adobe 'certainly' will be shipping on the latest version of Android. He goes on to call Steve's essay 'a smokescreen,' noting that more than 100 apps are currently in the App Store used Adobe's software.

In response to Steve's assertion that '...Flash is the number one reason Macs crash,' Narayen said that, if Adobe does crash a Mac, it's probably got something 'to do with the Apple operating system.'

He goes on to warn developers that Apple's restrictiveness will make their work 'cumbersome,' saying that they'll need to manage two workflows: One for Apple and one for everything else. In fact, he asks WSJ writer Alan Murray if the Journal would want two separate development processes when creating content. Mr. Murray responded that it would be '...better if you could use one set' of tools.

Finally, Narayen insists that Apple's adherence to a single platform is a detriment. He concludes that Adobe's concept is best for most developers, as it allows them to distribute apps out to many places rather than forcing them to pick one.

And for the record,
Narayen uses a Google Nexus One and considers the iPad 'a good first-generation device.'

Apple has posted their Thoughts on Flash, signed by Steve Jobs himself, which echos a lot of the commentary that you've probably already read on why Apple isn't supporting Flash on iPhone OS devices, and why they plan to block apps that allow Flash programs to be recompiled into iPhone OS programs, especially games.

Beginning with citing their long-standing relationship, Steve outlines six points: openness, 'the full web', security and performance, battery life, touch, and the drawbacks of relying on third-party development tools.

In case anyone has been unclear thus far, or has been waiting for a version of the iPhone OS that supports Flash, here is your clear and unmistakable sign: you will never see Flash on an iPhone OS device. Steve's letter addresses the 'why not?' questions.

Canon 5D Mark II used to shoot entire House season finale, director says it's 'the future'

May 17, folks. That's the date when the grumpy doctor you wish you were and the snazzy camera you wish you owned will join forces on American network television. The final episode in this season's run of House has been shot exclusively using Canon's 5D Mark II, and the show's director Greg Yaitanes has been taking questions about the experience on Twitter. PetaPixel have helpfully collated the Q&A session into a coherent pseudo-interview, which you'll be able to find at the source below. The major takeaway is that the crew liked the experience and didn't have to do an overwhelming amount of work to adapt to the different shooting method. Guess after SNL and its own movie, the 5D Mark II just had to go and do a guest appearance on its favorite TV show.
