Facebook 3.0 for iPhone released

After a couple of weeks of waiting in the iTunes app store approval queue, the 3rd major update of the popular Facebook for iPhone [iTunes Link] application has been released. Joe Hewitt, the developer of the app, has been working on it for quite some time and submitted it for review on 8/16. If you're still seeing 2.5 in the app store, Joe suggests deleting the app from your phone and reinstalling it -- it will be 3.0.

The new version includes some of the most requested features including:

  • Better news feed with direct links to comments

  • Ability to 'Like' posts

  • RSVP to events

  • Create/upload photos to albums

  • Write/edit notes

  • Customizable home screen

  • Improved photo viewing with zoom

  • Better notifications

Hewitt is already working on the next release, version 3.1, which is rumored to focus on adding Push Notifications.

Check out some shots of the app in action:

Connecticut man consults Apple Genius and gets arrested

A Fairfield, Connecticut man took his Apple G5 desktop to the Genius Bar at the Stamford Town Center store complaining about some issues with his image file thumbnails. It seemed some thumbnails were overwriting thumbnails on other images and they didn't match up.
According to court documents, the Genius started examining the files, and allegedly found pictures of naked juvenile girls in suggestive poses.
The tech called a policeman who was stationed at the mall, and the customer Raymond Miller was promptly arrested and charged with possession of child pornography. If convicted, Miller faces a minimum of 5 years in jail.
Police also searched Miller's home, but found nothing illegal.
Remember, when you bring your Mac into a store for service the technicians will likely see whatever is on your machine in the course of repairing it.
The tech could have ignored the alleged porn, but that could likely make him an accessory under some state laws. Apple warns people to always have a good backup of their data when they bring something in for repair. It's also a good idea to remove anything you don't want anyone else to see -- financial data or home inventories, for example.
This incident is reminiscent of 2 cases in Florida where the Best Buy Geek Squad techs found illegal porn on computers brought in for repair. The employees reported the porn, and both men were arrested.
Then in an ironic turnabout, a three-month investigation by the Consumerist blog caught Geek Squad employees taking porn off a computer and sharing it with others. It was also alleged that some employees routinely stole music, pictures and other data from computers that were in for repair by copying the data off to personal thumb drives.

Please support Steph towards Commonwealth Women's Antarctic Expedition

Hi all,

A friend of mine was selected to represent Cyprus in the Commonwealth Women's Antarctic Expedition. Steph needs sponsorship to raise the money needed for this excellent opportunity. Please check below message from Steph and if you can support her.

Hi all, this is Steph the expedition team member from Cyprus. In November I will be attempting to become the first Cypriot, man or woman, to ski to the South Pole.

However, I need to raise a minimum of 10,000 € in the next month in order to buy essential equipment that I will need, including ski’s, boots, sleeping bags and stoves.

We have received no government funding therefore I am appealing to Cypriots at home and abroad to help me plant the Cypriot flag at the bottom of the world!

The aim is for 1000 people to sponsor a minimum of €10 by the 20th of September.
As well as helping me represent Cyprus, each 10 donaton will earn you an entry in the draw to win a grand prize!! (The more you donate, the more entries you receive into the draw!!) The draw for the grand prize will be made on the 15th of October. The winning email/name will be randomly drawn by an expedition team member.

Anything raised above the 10,000 € will go towards helping my team mates from Ghana and Jamaica pay for their equipment.

Please spread the word! Colleagues, mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents - even pets!

1000 x €10 in 31 days! Spread the word!

Love,

Steph xx

Apple’s Official iPhone 3G Unlock

While most iPhone users are aware of unofficial unlock methods, you may be surprised to discover that it’s possible to legally unlock your device, courtesy of Apple.

official_iPhone_3G_unlock

The above image is the not-often-seen official unlock notification, as displayed in iTunes. The dialogue succinctly confirms that the user’s iPhone, in this case a 3G, has been unlocked and can now be used on any carrier. Note the Apple logo at the top left — this is a result of an official unlock sanctioned by Apple.

Read on to find out how I legally unlocked my iPhone 3G.

In June, while over 1 million early adopters in the U.S. picked up their brand new iPhone 3GS devices, I was anxiously waiting for the official launch in my current country of residence, Finland. I picked up my iPhone 3GS in Helsinki just two weeks ago, when it was finally launched by Sonera.

Regarding Sonera, think of it as a less-repugnant version of AT&T. As the exclusive distributor of the iPhone over in Finland, Sonera has turned out to be a somewhat benevolent carrier. The carrier’s unlimited data plan is reasonably priced, and home hacking your iPhone to tether to your Macbook is positively encouraged.

And now I’ve discovered that Sonera is also happy to lend a helping hand in unlocking your old iPhone 3G. When the 3G was released last year, Sonera customers had to sign up for a two-year contract. When upgrading to the iPhone 3GS, those same customers are given the option to pay off the remainder of their original 3G contract. Paying off the contract, and thus completing the two years prematurely, entitles the customer to have their iPhone 3G unlocked.

The helpful assistant at the Sonera store made a note of my IMEI number and then passed it onto his boss — after that there’s a special piece of software that only his boss is authorized to use. This mystical application submits the IMEI to Apple, which in turn authorizes the device for unlocking.

I was advised that when the iPhone 3G was next synced with iTunes, it would be unlocked. Minutes later, back at home, I connected the iPhone 3G to iTunes and received a new carrier settings update. After downloading and installing the update, Apple’s official iPhone unlock screen appeared.

Going the legit route was a much more painless process than using a proxy SIM or the Dev Team’s unofficial unlock. Also worth noting is that, unlike some of the illicit approaches, this unlock is permanent: I’ll be able to keep updating the iPhone’s OS without losing the ability to use any carrier SIM in the device.

It was a surprisingly quick, easy and free unlock for me, although I’d be very interested to find out if any of our readers around the world have had similar success in unlocking their iPhones.

Apple airs two new Get a Mac ads: "Surprise" and "Top of the Line":

With all of the other Apple news surrounding Snow Leopard yesterday, Apple starting airing two new 'Get a Mac' ads last night on TV and has also posted them on the company website.
The first ad, 'Surprise,' shows a woman talking to Mac; she wants to purchase a 'great computer', but Mac seems to be recommending something unexpected.
The other ad, 'Top of the Line,' shows another another woman wanting a 'great computer' -- and PC introduces her to a fine high-end PC played by Seinfeld alum Patrick Warburton.

test_pilot_logo_jan09.pngIf you want to help Mozilla to make Firefox better but you are not a developer, here is you chance. Mozilla just announced the launch of Test Pilot, the organization's new distributed usability lab. Test pilots will be enlisted in various usability tests and will be some of the first to see some of Mozilla's ideas for new user interfaces and Mozilla Labs products. We first wrote about Test Pilot when it was just a 'still-in concept platform.' Now, however, you can download the Test Pilot add-on for Firefox 3.5 here and begin to help Mozilla make Firefox even better.

First Tests Are Coming Soon

For now, Mozilla will start the program with a survey that aims to get a better understanding of who is joining the Test Pilot community. The first actual tests should arrive soon after this first survey is complete.

test_pilot_1.pngMozilla stresses that it will take its users' privacy seriously. Participants have to opt-in and data will be stored in anonymous form. Only aggregate test data will be made available to the public.

Overall, this looks like a great project. Usability studies tend to be slow and costly, yet with Test Pilot, Mozilla will be able to quickly enlist feedback about new design ideas from its large community of users.

WD TV-2 spruces up Western Digital's already attractive media player offering

WD TV-2 spruces up Western Digital's already attractive media player offering: "

Western Digital really hit a sweet spot last year with its $130 WD TV HD Media Player. The thing pumped out 1080p over HDMI at an attractive price, and that's all most people really needed. The newly leaked WD TV-2 revisits the formula, but adds in network playback over the new Ethernet jack, DTS audio decoding, and a component video plug for folks caught in the technological no man's land between composite and HDMI. Outside of that there's a just plain silly amount of codec support, which is hard not to love. No word on price or a release date, but the leaked photos and detailed specs seem to imply this thing is ready for prime time.
